Because It’s so common
You can call it an epidemic. It's so common. In my clinical practice as an ophthalmologist, approximately 60-70% of the patients have some form of dry eye.
Extensive consumption of digital content, especially post Covid, has significantly increased incidence of dry eye. Key thing to note here is that not every patient is the same, the type and severity of dry eye differs. Also many patients have associated lid conditions like meibomitis or blepharitis to go along with dry eye.
While ‘lubricants’ are generally known by the common populus, the type of lubricant that needs to be prescribed will depend on nature and severity of dry eye. This decision along with the need of other medications like low dose steroids, mast cell stabilizers is best left to your eye doctor and not to chemists, Rmp’s and Pro’s etc. They are neither equipped nor qualified.
